In this call to arms for the dispirited Democratic party, journalist Peter Beinart, an editor of the New Republic, seeks to reconnect liberalism with its historic roots and thereby offer a model that it can use to win in 2008. Reviewing the history of liberalism in the Post-WW II era, Beinart reminds liberals that at that time they took a strong position against totalitarian regimes and engaged with the enemy forthrightly. Today?s liberals, he says, need to do the same with today?s radical Islamist threat. Beinart reminds liberals that they are out of touch with the general American public, and says that they need to win the hearts and minds of American voters--for to fail will bring about further erosion of civil liberties. Beinart `s efforts to bring liberalism into the mainstream seem to disassociate it from the Left. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.
